Day 3 - Fernie, BC to Eureka, MT

After a bit of a restless night for me in our hostel, we managed to get on the road by 7:30 and hit a great little coffee shop a few blocks away on our way out of Fernie.  The day started pretty cool will low grey clouds after a good bit of rain last night. By about 10 am, it had warmed up to around 75F and bright sun, so we stopped several times to strip off various layers of clothes. We seem to be living a charmed life in terms of weather - fingers crossed that it holds on a bit longer.

As we headed out of town we were also joined by two Kiwis (Ingrid and Miles) who had been having major navigation problems.  They were really happy to tag along as we seemed to be going in the right direction and our Garmin routes haven't failed us yet!  The lesson here is to plot your own routes- they may not be perfect, but you get a lot more familiar with where the route SHOULD go, and it's much easier to tell when something goes wrong!

Today's route was probably one of the easiest days we'll have in the next couple of weeks, as we kept following downstream along the Elk River Valley.  The forest gradually changed from slost all spice and for, to having mixed stands of red cedar, and then farther south into lodgepole pine.  Then as we neared the USA border, the landscape opened up even more onto open rangeland with cattle.

Just into the afternoon, we reached another milestone - the Roosville Border Station.  A bit anticlimactic, but good to be back in the USA nonetheless!-).  Another hour on, and we reached out planned destination for the day, the town of Eureka, MT.
Fortunately, we were able to secure a relatively cheap room in a motel on the main drag into town. So tonight we're hoping for a really good sleep before taking on 2600' Whitefish Divide tomorrow morning.
Cheers!
